At The John Burns Foundation, we believe that every act of kindness can make a difference.
We aim to improve the self-esteem of children, young people and adults who may be at risk of social isolation by encouraging:
Activities are set in very tranquil locations, using the natural environment as a setting. We have a community garden and polytunnel for growing, an educational kitchen for cooking and a workshop for crafting and building.
Following the model of Social Enterprise, many of the products made are created for the benefit of the community. The funds that are raised from various events/sales are reinvested into the growth & development of the Foundation. This provides the individuals with a sense of satisfaction and fulfilment and has a positive impact on their self-worth.
The organic and fluid nature of the Better Tomorrow programme has enabled us to facilitate many opportunities for intergenerational and multi-agency projects, to best support the individuals who access our services. We have developed positive working relationships with different local agencies and organisations such as the NHS, schools, youth service and other charities.
In April 2022, our fully equipped, fully adaptable educational kitchen opened its doors, with thanks to National Lottery Funding.
The aim of the project is to create an enjoyable environment where individuals of all ages and abilities can learn domestic cookery skills. The focus is on learning to cook healthy, affordable, and straightforward meals from scratch. We focus on using fresh ingredients and, where possible, produce from our community garden.
The project has so far provided opportunities for intergenerational sessions, children and families to learn cooking for the future, and help for individuals looking to live more independently.

CLASH (Community Led Action for Sustainable Horticulture), seeks to create lasting behaviour change around sustainable food habits.
Through community consultation, we determined that, despite growing concern, many people have a lack of knowledge regarding how they can actively engage in helping tackle the climate emergency, as well as how they can affordably access a healthy diet. With funding from the National Lottery, we have developed CLASH to provide the opportunity for people to learn how to sustainably grow, harvest and cook healthy food.
The goal is to facilitate the development of new skills, motivating individuals to change their habits, thus having a positive impact on the environment and their lifestyle.
